Georgie Christian
Year 9 & 10 Assistant Principal & 10B Science Teacher
Email: Georgie.Christian371@schools.sa.edu.au
My Name is Georgie Christian, and I am very excited to be continuing at Whyalla Secondary College in 2024 as the year 9/10 Assistant Principal. Though I am originally from Adelaide, I began my teaching career in Port Pirie where I worked for 8 years at John Pirie Secondary School, teaching Maths and Science. In 2017 I expanded my skills and knowledge as the Maths and Science Coordinator, I continued in this role for 5 years at John Pirie Secondary School and 1 year at Gawler and District college. Last year Whyalla became home as I got to know the school and wider community and explored the local and surrounding sites with my family. One of my favourite things about being an educator is seeing the growth that students make both academically and personally throughout the years. Working with them to learn, achieve success, and grow as individuals is a privilege. Outside of school I enjoy walking with my dog, camping or hiking trips with friends and family, and exploring the beautiful sites that SA and Australia has to offer. I also like to challenge myself to take new opportunities and get outside of my comfort zone, which has often led discovering new activities I really enjoy like skiing, sandboarding, skydiving or shark cage diving. 2023’s personal challenge was taking a leap of faith and bungee jumping in Cairns.

Hello everyone! My name is Morgan Dwyer and this is my first year of teaching with Whyalla Secondary College. I will be working with the Year 10 and 11 communities and teaching English and HASS. I’ve moved from QLD to join the team here as part of the Teach for Australia Leadership Development Program and I’m excited to get into life in Whyalla. Outside of school I enjoy cooking, singing, spending time with my cat, and am (slowly!) learning to play the guitar. I’m here for you and your family and if there is any way I can support your schooling journey, please reach out to me for a chat. I’m thrilled to be here and to see what 2024 has in store for us!

I am Chris Hale, I have been a Maths and Science teacher in Whyalla for over ten years. I am teaching primarily in the middle school 9 and 10 year levels. I always try to encourage students to explore the world of science and draw on my astrophysics background to show the epic scale of the science we learn.
Lauren McManus
10D Caregroup Teacher
Email: Lauren.Mcmanus20@schools.sa.edu.au
I grew up in Whyalla and completed my secondary schooling at Samaritan College in 2013. Shortly after, I moved to Adelaide and completed a Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology and a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Fashion at Flinders University. I’ve always loved being creative and crafty whether it’s hands on or digitally creating. Covid-19 led me to a career change and the beginning of my teaching journey, completing a Masters in Teaching (Secondary) through Charles Darwin University. I’m excited for 2024 and to be a part of the Visual Arts and Future Technologies communities across multiple year levels.

Email: Sarah.Hemming758@schools.sa.edu.a
Hello, my name is Dr Sarah Hemming and I have had the privilege of being the Science Coordinator for Whyalla Secondary College since Term 3 2022. Before becoming a teacher in 2021, I worked as a Scientist at Oxford University in the United Kingdom in the field of Biochemistry. I am passionate about Science and teaching students, which led to a career change into secondary teaching. I am trained in Senior Sciences; Chemistry Biology, and Psychology and enjoy watching the journey of our senior students into careers beyond school. This year I will be spending most of my time in the year 10 space with my goal to inspire more students to study senior sciences in 2025. On weekends you will find me in my vegetable garden and cooking my homegrown food. I look forward to meeting you throughout the year.
Nicole Grant
10D English Teacher
Email: Nicole.Grant781@schools.sa.edu.au
Hi everyone! My name is Nicole Caitlin Grant. 2024 is my first year as a fully registered teacher. I was fortunate enough to complete my final practical teaching placement last year in 2023 of term 2, where I started to work at Whyalla Secondary College in terms 3 and 4! I’ve been a bit around the place growing up, born in Port Pirie, early years raised in Alice Springs and back to Adelaide, now I live in Port Augusta. As a new teacher, I am very keen to see where my new teacher journey takes me and to build strong relationships with the Whyalla community of fellow staff, students and parents. I specialise in History and English. I have a passion for sharing stories, perspectives and awareness in literacy and studying the past. Outside of teaching, I love burying my nose in a book as much as I can! I love collecting plants, taking polaroids and wanting to go on more hikes this year! One of my favourite quotes is: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” – Audrey H.
